One of the world’s greatest leaders was once asked, when confronting a seemingly impossible situation: “What is that in your hand?”
Electric vehicle survey after electric vehicle survey talks about how it is RIP for EVs because of all the things they don’t have: range, infrastructure and price.
However, if we follow that great advice and look at what we do have in our hands, we will see that the time is actually RIPE for EVs – and for dumping the pump and for making our air easier to breather and for saving money and time on our transportation.
Range – What we have in our hands is the fact that most of our driving is made up of one or two people using their cars for short trips. It is surprising to find out how well our travel patterns fit today’s affordable battery technology: 70% of our driving is less than 40 miles; and up to 85% of our daily driving is less than 60 miles. Interestingly, almost 9 out of 10 trips consist of only one or two people in the car. By building electric cars that fit how we drive, we find that we have sufficient battery technology in our hands today (if we use our electric cars as 2nd or 3rd family vehicles).
Infrastructure – Building electric vehicles to fit most of our travel needs, but not all, allows us to use what we already have in our hands in terms of infrastructure: Our nations electrical infrastructure can support, without any additional cost, 200 million of these purpose-built electric cars -- if the charging is done overnight from any of the hundreds of millions of 110-volt outlets that also already exist.
Price – What we have in our hands is the ability to build an 80 mph electric car, designed to fit your daily range needs -- and our nation's electrical infrastructure -- at a price that is less than the average gasoline-powered car! This price breakthrough gives you a return on your EV investment the first day you drive it!
Energy Efficiency – What is also in your hand is the $50 you will spend on your next fill-up. That $50, for the average car, will take you less than 400 miles. That same $50 spent on electricity for a Myers Motors, purpose-built, electric car, will take you over 2,000 miles (based on the average price of electricity).
It is in our hands to dump the pump, create healthier air to breathe, reduce congestion, and put more money and time back in our pockets – all using existing electric vehicle technologies. In early June, we will explain how you can help change your world by using what is already in our (collectively speaking) hands.
